The SSU detained another Russian military intelligence agent in the Khmelnytskyi region. He was spying on the airfields of the Defence Forces and preparing terrorist attacks near the shopping mall in western Ukraine.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the SSU press centre.
What do we know about the enemy's accomplice?
According to SSU military counterintelligence, the suspect was a 30-year-old local unemployed man. The enemy's special service recruited him through Telegram channels, where he was looking for "easy money".
"In exchange for the money, the occupiers instructed their agent to organise an online broadcast of combat activity at one of the military airfields in the region," the SSU said.
To do this, the traitor equipped an "observation post" right in his own home, which is located near a secure facility of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Installed a camera on the roof with access for the Russian Federation
It was documented how the offender installed a video camera with a remote access function for a Russian game on the roof of a private household.
The offender's next undercover task was to prepare the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) near a local shopping centre.
"To carry out the terrorist attack, the traitor received detailed instructions from his Russian handler, in particular on how to make explosives from 'improvised' means and a mobile phone," the SBU added.
It was on this gadget that the occupiers ordered their agent to install a specialised remote tracking programme to monitor its movement to a potential target.
In this way, the Russian secret service planned to remotely detonate the IED together with the defendant in order to eliminate him as an "unnecessary witness".
How was the offender detained?
SBU military counter-intelligence officers exposed the agent in advance and detained him, preventing the crimes. After that, the SSU took comprehensive measures to secure the locations of the Defence Forces.
During the searches, the SBU seized mobile phones used by the detainee to gather intelligence and communicate with the Russian group. He also had a gadget with which he was supposed to equip an IED to commit a terrorist attack.
SSU investigators served the agent a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
Article 111(2) (high treason committed under martial law);
Part 3 of Article 114-2 (unauthorised dissemination of information on the movement or deployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations established in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, committed under martial law).
The offender is in custody without the possibility of bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
