"We will not let them steal our future": rally involving thousands of people against Babiš government is taking place in Prague. PHOTOS
On Saturday, 21 March, a protest rally attended by thousands of people is taking place in the centre of the Czech capital against the government of Andrej Babiš.
This was reported by DW on social media platform X, according to Censor.NET.
The aim of the protest
The rally, entitled "We will not let our future be stolen", is taking place in the Letná district of Prague. It is organised by the association "A Million Moments for Democracy".
According to the association’s chairman, Mikuláš Minar, the campaign aims to draw attention to the danger of the erosion of democracy and the oligarchisation of society as a result of the Babiš government’s policies.
Reasons for the rally
The opposition, in particular, criticises the government’s plans to change the funding of state media, cut defence spending and downplay the Russian threat.
"The arrogance of the authorities is growing, the state is being turned into a cash cow, and extremist politicians are holding our country hostage. This is happening faster than you think. If we do not want to end up in the same situation as Slovakia and Hungary, we must stand up to this while there is still time," the organisers of the protest stated.
One of the reasons for the protest was the ‘foreign agents’ bill proposed by Babiš’s government, which provides for a broad scope of application and heavy fines. Critics believe that this law is directed against human rights NGOs and effectively duplicates the relevant Russian legislation.
The organisers of the event expect up to 400,000 people to take part in the rally.
