In Korostyshiv, in the Zhytomyr region, the pedestrian section of the main bridge over the Teteriv River has collapsed, leaving the town with disrupted transport links. The bridge has been completely closed to traffic, and emergency services are working at the scene
According to Censor.NET, Yurii Denysovets, secretary of the Korostyshiv City Council, announced this in a video address.
Pedestrian section of bridge collapses in Korostyshiv
"At around 10:00, an emergency occurred – the pedestrian section of our main bridge across the Teteriv River collapsed. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries. Urgent measures are currently being taken, namely: the entire bridge will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians until an inspection has been carried out," said Denysovets.
According to him, specialists from the State Emergency Service, the police, municipal services and representatives of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration’s Department of Regional Development – which is responsible for the structure – are working at the scene.
Transport links in the city are disrupted
The secretary added that the collapse of the bridge has caused inconvenience for residents. A diversion is being organised in the town so that public transport can maintain services between the Zarichchia neighbourhood and the centre of Korostyshiv.
"The design documentation for the bridge’s reconstruction was drawn up back in 2022. Due to a lack of funds, the repair work was not carried out. We hope to be able to find reserve funds to repair the bridge and reopen it to traffic," the official noted.
As a reminder, on 7 June in the village of Vyzhenka in the Chernivtsi region, during a school trip, more than 30 children walked onto a wooden bridge across the river at the same time. The bridge could not bear the weight and collapsed into the river along with the children. Several schoolchildren suffered serious injuries.
