Four fires broke out over the course of the week in the forests of the Chernihiv and Sumy regions as a result of Russian shelling. In total, the fires covered almost 10 hectares.

This was reported by the state-owned enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’, according to Censor.NET.

The largest fire covered 3.8 hectares

The fires were recorded in the Pishchansky, Orlykivsky, Lyubytsky and Oster Forest Districts. Forest rangers managed to contain and extinguish all four fires.

The largest fire occurred in the Oster Forest District. Due to the dry weather, the fire spread rapidly through the forest floor and covered 3.8 hectares.

The fire was contained within a few hours. Afterwards, the foresters remained on site for about another day, extinguishing smouldering pockets and monitoring the area to prevent the fire from reigniting.

The risk of new fires remains high due to the heat

"Forests of Ukraine" notes that due to the dry and hot weather, the fire risk in the forests of the northern regions remains high. Russian shelling of border areas poses an additional threat.

As a result, forest rangers continue to be on duty round the clock and stand ready to tackle any new fires.
