A car carrying a Russian lieutenant-colonel and his wife has exploded in St Petersburg.
This is according to reports in the Russian media, as reported by Censor.NET.
What is known?
It happened on the morning of 27 August in the Slavyanka neighbourhood. According to journalists, the man died at the scene, whilst the woman was admitted to intensive care.
The explosion took place at around 10 am near the ‘Magnit’ shop on Kolpinsky Highway. Preliminary reports suggest that a homemade explosive device went off in the car.
The Geely crossover exploded immediately after the engine was started. The car was seriously damaged, with debris scattered over a distance of tens of metres. The cause of the explosion and the identity of the victim have not yet been officially established.
According to local media reports, a Russian army lieutenant-colonel and his wife were believed to have been in the car.
The explosion occurred in a neighbourhood that was undergoing intensive development of housing for military personnel. In 2010, Putin visited the area to inspect flats built for the military. By 2012, the Ministry of Defence owned almost a third of the housing under construction in this area.
