Staff at the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have launched an investigation into an explosion at a police station in Rivne, which resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to three others.
This was reported by Censor.NET, citing the State Bureau of Investigation’s press office.
Details of the explosion
The explosion occurred on 31 August 2026 at around 15:30 in the inner courtyard of Police Station No. 1 of the Rivne District Police Department. The deputy head of the department was killed in the blast. The head of one of the departments, another deputy and an inspector from one of the divisions also sustained serious injuries. They are currently in hospital.
What has been established so far?
According to preliminary information, one of the munitions may have detonated on the premises due to a breach of the rules for the safe storage of explosive substances.
Immediately after the incident, SBI officers launched urgent investigative measures. An examination of the scene has now been completed, debris and official documentation have been seized, witness interviews are ongoing, and a series of expert examinations have been commissioned to establish the circumstances and causes of the explosion.
Preliminary classification of the offence: negligent storage of firearms or ammunition (Article 264 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
What led up to it
- As previously reported, an explosion occurred in the administrative building of the district police station in Rivne. One police officer has been killed and others injured.
- Following the incident, the State Bureau of Investigations has launched a pre-trial investigation under Article 264 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Law enforcement officers are currently establishing all the circumstances and causes of the explosion.
