Court sanctions trying Yanukovych in absentia. DOCUMENT (in Ukrainian)

The Pechersk district court of Kyiv granted permission to the Military Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine to try in absentia fugitive ex-President Viktor Yanukovych charged of high treason.

As reported by a correspondent for Censor.NET, the Pechersk district court made the ruling tonight.

The court was reportedly hearing the case initiated against Viktor Yanukovich for high treason and endangering the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

According to Censor.NET correspondent, Yanukovych's lawyers filed about 30 motions at today's session of the court.

The defense of the ex-president tried to recuse the judges hearing the case and the rest of the judges of the Pechersk district court.

Earlier, the Prosecutor's Office requested the Pechersk district court of Kyiv to sanction criminal proceedings in absentia against Yanukovych taking into account that the ex-president was put on the wanted list. Besides, the Prosecutor's Office obtained the arrest warrant for him.

As reported, Ukraine's Prosecutor General Yurii Lutsenko read out the allegations against fugitive Ukrainian ex-president Viktor Yanukovych from the Sviatoshynskyi district court on Nov. 28, 2016.

Lutsenko announced suspicion to Yanukovych of the high treason and assistance to Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. He is also charged with crackdown on the Maidan activists, abuse of power, and large-scale embezzlement.
