German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the need to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine as soon as possible and called on the Russian president to end the war immediately.
He said this during a visit to the 203rd Tank Brigade in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is to donate 14 tanks from its stockpile to the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reports Censor.NЕТ with reference to Twitter of Defense Minister.
The German Defense Minister emphasized the importance of a quick transfer of tanks to Ukraine and ordering new tanks to replace the transferred ones, as Russia's policy requires strengthening the Alliance's armies as well. "Ukraine needs all possible support. And it doesn't matter whether these are Leopard 2A6 or 2A4, these tanks can play an important role in Ukraine's fight against the aggressor - Russia," the politician said.
He noted that "it would be possible not to transfer the tanks, but this is not an alternative."
The Minister admitted that it would take time for the Bundeswehr to receive the new tanks, but emphasized that "this is the price we are paying now."
The training of Ukrainian soldiers will be accelerated, the Minister said, but emphasized that "there is no other way." The training will begin soon. The head of the Bundeswehr also informed that he continues negotiations on tanks with allies and partners.
Pistorius also addressed Putin through journalists with an appeal: "Stop the war against Ukraine, and stop it immediately."
