Drones attacked Samara region overnight: chemical plants are believed to have been targeted. VIDEO
On the night of 21 March, the Togliattikauchuk and KuibyshevAzot plants, located in Togliatti in the Samara Region, were attacked.
This was reported by Censor.NET, citing Russian Telegram channels.
According to locals, a large number of explosions were heard during the night. It later emerged that a fire had broken out in the area of two chemical plants located close to one another – Togliattikauchuk and KuibyshevAzot.
It is not yet known which of the plants is on fire.
The targeted plants: what is known?
"Tolyattikauchuk" is a petrochemical plant that produces synthetic rubber and chemical components used in the manufacture of tyres and rubber products.
The company is one of the key producers of synthetic rubber in Russia.Main products: isoprene, butadiene and other types of rubber for the tyre industry.
"Tolyattikauchuk" has an indirect but significant military importance. The company produces synthetic rubber – a key component for tyres.
Without it, mass production is impossible:
- tyres for army trucks and tractors
- armoured vehicles (APCs, IFVs)
- specialised vehicles (fuel tankers, engineering vehicles)
In other words, the plant’s products form the basis for the army’s mobility.
The war relies heavily on transport. Even if the plant does not produce weapons, it supplies materials for:
- military transport
- ammunition supply
- vehicle recovery
Following the sanctions, Russia is restricted in its imports of many chemical materials, so enterprises such as ‘Tolyattikauchuk’ have become even more important.
Synthetic rubber is used not only in tyres, but also in:
- seals for equipment
- rubber components for weaponry
- insulation materials.
"KuibyshevAzot" is a chemical enterprise producing nitrogen fertilisers and chemical raw materials (caprolactam, polyamides). The enterprise is part of a large petrochemical cluster alongside "Tolyattikauchuk". One of the leaders of the Russian chemical industry
It specialises in the production of:
- caprolactam (raw material for polyamides/nylon)
- polyamide-6 (PA-6)
- ammonia
- nitrogen fertilisers
- industrial gases
Caprolactam and polyamides are used for:
- technical fibres (including tyre cord)
- high-strength plastics and components
- military equipment components
Ammonia – a base material for:
- fertilisers
- but it can also be a component in the manufacture of explosives (via derivatives, such as nitrates).
