The victim said that the passenger, upon hearing his Eastern accent, began to insult him on the basis of his nationality. However, he did not stop there and struck the driver on the head with a plastic bottle.
The incident was captured on camera by a neighbouring car. The footage shows the taxi stopping, with the passenger running out of it and fleeing. The driver gets out of the car and crouches down beside it.
The attacker was subsequently arrested.
"The evidence gathered by the police has enabled charges to be brought against the 23-year-old man for assaulting a person on the grounds of their nationality, an offence punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment," the statement reads.
Law enforcement officials reiterated that no national, cultural or linguistic differences can be a justification for aggression or the humiliation of another person. Every instance of such behaviour is treated very seriously and is subject to criminal liability.
