Ukraine should receive compensation from NATO for fact that it cannot join Alliance right now, - Nauseda
NATO cannot accept Ukraine into its membership in the midst of a war, instead, the Alliance must provide Kyiv with sufficient security guarantees.
This was stated by the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda, Censor.NET reports with reference to Verslo Žinious.
"We have said many times that it is enough to repeat empty words about an open door to NATO. We must find something to compensate for our inability to grant Ukraine full membership in NATO at this moment," he said.
Nauseda emphasized that it would be extremely difficult to offer a country in the midst of a war full membership in a military alliance - everyone understands that. But it is necessary to find sufficient security guarantees, such as military and political support for Ukraine, and an institutional framework for closer cooperation between Ukraine and NATO.
"It is important to understand that the war will end with the victory of Ukraine, but what's next?" - he noted.
In his opinion, these issues will be an important part of the July NATO summit in Vilnius. Nauseda added that strengthening the air defense of Poland and the Baltic states will also be discussed at the summit.
"The situation is very serious and, unfortunately, it is getting worse, especially considering that Belarus is actively involved in this conflict and is ready to deploy tactical nuclear weapons," he summarized.
