EU to impose first sanctions against Russia for disinformation - Bloomberg

Russia faces new sanctions for disinformation

The European Union intends to impose sanctions on Russia for its disinformation operations and other hybrid activities. The first package includes measures against more than a dozen individuals and three legal entities.

This is reported by Bloomberg, Censor.NET informs with reference to UP.

Who will be affected by the new sanctions?

The publication, having examined the proposed sanctions package, notes that the proposed sanctions will affect several Russian intelligence officers and groups, as well as government officials and media entrepreneurs.

"The restrictions are part of a new sanctions regime approved earlier this year that focuses on disinformation operations and other destabilizing activities sponsored by Russia around the world," the publication says.

In addition, further sanctions are proposed against Belarus, in particular against about two dozen people accused of human rights violations or those who benefit materially from their ties to the regime of self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko.

When will the sanctions package be approved?

As noted, the EU foreign ministers intend to approve these packages at a meeting on Monday in Brussels on the eve of the elections scheduled for next month in Belarus.

Earlier, Censor.NET reported that the EU ambassadors agreed on the 15th package of sanctions against Russia: it provides for restrictive measures against the Russian shadow fleet. As reported earlier, representatives of the European Union failed to approve the 15th package of sanctions against Russia on December 6.
