Ukraine’s progress is significant: EU Council approves conclusions on enlargement

EU praises Ukraine’s progress in reforms on its way to membership

The EU Council of Ministers for General Affairs has positively assessed Ukraine's achievements in implementing the necessary reforms to become a member of the European Union.

This is stated in the Council's conclusions on EU enlargement, Censor.NET reports.

"The EU Council reaffirms its firm support for Ukraine on its path to the EU and welcomes Ukraine's commitment to the reform process. The EU Council welcomes the formal opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine in June 2024, as well as the substantial progress in reforms made over the past year, despite the extraordinary challenges posed by Russia's war of aggression," the document says.

The European ministers emphasized:

  • Significant progress in reforms, despite the challenges caused by Russian aggression;
  • Successful screening of national legislation, which paves the way for the next negotiation stages;
  • Ukraine's efforts to strengthen the rule of law: finalization of the High Council of Justice, the HQCJ and the Constitutional Court;
  • Advancing anti-corruption reform, strengthening institutions to fight corruption and money laundering.

The EU Council also called on Ukraine to continue to ensure freedom of expression and media, while countering disinformation in line with international standards.

The conclusions state that the opening of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU in June 2024 was an important step forward. Further progress in reforms will bring Ukraine closer to joining the European Union.
