First medicines based on medical cannabis registered in Ukraine
Ukraine has registered the first medicines based on medical cannabis - oral drops made in Spain. They may appear in pharmacies in early 2025.
This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanyshyna and the Patients of Ukraine Charitable Foundation, Censor.NET reports.
Patients will be able to receive medicines based on medical cannabis by electronic prescription. They will be available in pharmacies licensed to retail, manufacture, and circulate narcotic substances.
"The registration of the first medicines is a huge victory for Ukrainian patients who have been fighting for a pain-free life for 6 years," the foundation said.
Who will medical cannabis medicines help?
Medical cannabis-based medicines will be used to treat Ukrainians with
- chronic pain
- Parkinson's disease;
- nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy;
- Tourette's syndrome - a neurological disease that manifests itself in motor and vocal tics;
- drug-resistant epilepsy;
- diseases that cause seizures in childhood;
- anorexia due to HIV.
According to the foundation, in addition to oral cannabis drops, pharmacies will soon be able to buy hard capsules, dental pastes, and gels, the forms of medicines approved by the Ministry of Health in 2024.
As a reminder, the law on the legalization of medical cannabis came into force in Ukraine on August 16. The law was adopted to regulate the circulation of cannabis in medical, industrial and scientific activities.
