"In this respect, it's also an opportunity for us to do the right thing," Merz said, referring to the strengthening of European defense readiness.
This means not just more money for armaments, but also much more efficient use of it. Simplifying and optimizing military development and defense procurement is essential.
In addition, Merz mentioned economies of scale and lower prices if EU governments jointly purchase weapons from the United States.
"There is no reason to look at Washington with fear," Merz added.
