On the morning of January 26, an underwater fiber-optic cable of the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC), located at a depth of more than 50 meters, was damaged.

According to Censor.NET with reference to Yevropeiska Pravda, this is stated in the publication of LSM,

The monitoring system recorded interruptions in data transmission on the Ventspils - Gotland section. LVRTC continues to provide data transmission services using other routes.

However, there may be a slowdown in speed, although this does not affect end users in Latvia.

Together with its partners, LVRTC has carried out inspections and measurements on the network using equipment installed in Ventspils.

"At the moment, there is reason to believe that the cable is significantly damaged and that the damage was caused by an external influence," LVRTC representative Vineta Sprugaine was quoted as saying by LETA news agency.

LVRTC informed the responsible authorities about the incident. Given that the cable lies at a depth of more than 50 meters, the specific type of damage can only be determined once repair work begins.

Prime Minister Ewika Silinia convened responsible ministers and heads of services in connection with the accident.

"We continue to cooperate with NATO and the countries of the Baltic Sea region to clarify the circumstances and investigate the incident," she said.

Damage to cables in the Baltic Sea

As a reminder, on December 25, the Eagle S tanker, which probably belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, damaged the Estlink 2 electric cable between Finland and Estonia and four telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland with its anchor.

In November 2024, a telecommunications cable between Sweden, Lithuania, Finland, and Germany was severed.

In October 2023, the Balticconnector gas pipeline and cables were damaged by the Newnew Polarbear.
