Court sentences rapists of 14-year-old girl in Zakarpattia to 6 years in prison

rape, abuse

The Volovets District Court of Zakarpattia region has passed a verdict in the case of rape of a minor girl.

This was reported by "Miller" Law Company, Censor.NET informs.

As noted, the two defendants were sentenced to 6 years in prison, and the court did not find any grounds for release on probation period.

According to the decision, the court also partially satisfied the civil claim of the injured party, ordering the defendants to pay UAH 300,000 of the UAH 450,000 of the claimed non-pecuniary damage, as they had already reimbursed part of the money.

The young men were detained and taken into custody right in the courtroom.

The victim's lawyers suggested that the prosecution might appeal the verdict.

What preceded it?

On 22 October 2024, the lawyers of Miller Law Company, representing the victim in the rape case, stated that the defendants had decided to mobilise to the Armed Forces in Obukhiv RTCR in Kyiv region, although they permanently reside in Zakarpattia region.

"In March this year, they turned 18, and right now, before the end of the trial, the defendants decided to mobilise. At the same time, they have no military education, have not served in the army and are not reserve officers, so they cannot be mobilised without their voluntary consent. Why did the defendants decide to mobilise just before the debates, i.e. the final phase of the trial, after which the court is supposed to announce its verdict? Isn't this an attempt to avoid the trial?" the statement reads.

As reported, in September 2023, three teenagers raped a 14-year-old girl in Zakarpattia.

After a year of trial, the court sentenced the offenders to a suspended sentence and compensation. The case received publicity. Judge Sofilkanych, who imposed the suspended sentence, was absent from work for three weeks - first because of illness, and then because of studying and holidays. The complaints against the judge will be reviewed by the High Council of Justice..

The prosecutor's office appealed the verdict. The Court of Appeal then cancelled the suspended sentence for the perpetrators. The case was sent for a new trial. It is also under the control of the Ombudsman.
