EU should strengthen Ukraine’s position ahead of potential peace talks, - EU Commissioner Kos

Martha Kos expresses strong support for Ukraine

European Commissioner for Enlargement Martha Kos emphasized the need for the EU to support Ukraine ahead of potential peace talks so that Ukraine is in a position of strength.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to Interfax-Ukraine.

"The EU has taken decisive steps to support Ukraine, and our commitment must not waver. Ukraine deserves a just peace. We need to put Ukraine in a position of strength, especially in the run-up to potential discussions on ending this aggressive war. Ukraine will need strong, credible, long-term security guarantees to deter future attacks," said Kos.

The Commissioner emphasized that the EU will continue to support Ukraine's defense industry, in particular through the use of proceeds from frozen Russian assets, and will help with the supply of ammunition and air defense. In addition, the EU is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia aimed at hampering its ability to wage war.

"At the same time, we will continue to support Ukraine in implementing the necessary reforms on its path to the EU, where they belong. The Ukrainian people are making enormous efforts in very difficult circumstances, and the EU must recognize this... We must join forces and open the first negotiating cluster, the cluster on fundamental issues, as soon as possible this year. Our European message to Ukraine is clear: Ukraine is part of our European family. We will support you and bring you to the European Union, where you belong," she added.

The total EU support to Ukraine has reportedly already exceeded 134 billion euros, and this amount will continue to grow.

She emphasized that the war in Ukraine is a struggle not only for territorial integrity, but also for the values that are the basis of European peace and security.

"This is a fight for the values that define us all. And for Europe's own security. Ukraine needs our continued political, economic and military support. Ukraine's struggle is also our struggle for a Europe that values justice over aggression and unity over division. By supporting Ukraine, we are also protecting the foundations of European peace and security. Together, we must remain resolute," Kos summarized.
