First volunteer fighter from Switzerland killed in war in Ukraine

For the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a Swiss volunteer fighter was killed.

The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the embassy in Kyiv learned of the death of the citizen in early 2025.
In an interview with the Swiss public broadcaster SRF, Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Steiner said that the volunteer was probably killed in action.
The circumstances of his death have not yet been clarified. In particular, it is not known in which unit he served and in which region he was at the time of his death.
It is noted that the Swiss military justice opened several criminal cases against Swiss citizens after the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine.
Citizens are suspected of involvement in hostilities as volunteers or mercenaries. Currently, 13 investigations are ongoing.
According to Swiss military criminal law, the service of Swiss citizens abroad can be punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine.
By February 24, 2022, the Swiss military justice opened three criminal proceedings related to the war in Ukraine.
