Ukraine’s NATO membership is unlikely due to resistance from US, Germany and Hungary - Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy: Ukraine should build its own NATO

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that if our country does not become part of the North Atlantic Alliance, Kyiv needs to "build its own NATO" despite the opposition from other countries.

He said this in an interview with the Economist, Censor.NET reports.

The Head of State acknowledged that Ukraine's membership in NATO looks unlikely at the moment due to opposition from Germany and Hungary and the United States.

At the same time, he said, Hungary's position could change if U.S. President Donald Trump "asks for it."

Zelenskyy emphasized that if the Alliance's doors "remain closed," Ukraine should "build its own NATO" - that is, strengthen its own army.

"We have to double it (the army - ed.). To be on a par with the Russian army," the president said.

The president also believes that under such conditions, Ukraine can receive security guarantees from the United States without turning to Russia, and Europe could help with financing.

According to Zelenskyy, strengthening its own army without joining NATO is Ukraine's "plan B."
