During peace talks, there may be ’unpleasant decisions’ on territories, - Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan

Peace talks. What they say in Turkey

Turkey does not rule out 'unpleasant decisions' regarding territories during peace talks.

This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"Turkey is willing and ready to play any role to promote peace in Ukraine and rebuild Ukraine. But first of all, we need a ceasefire and an effective and long-term peace plan," the Foreign Minister said.

According to Fidan, work on the peace plan is currently underway.

"The US administration, the Europeans and we are all working on different aspects of a possible ceasefire and peace plan... However, combining the short-term urgency of a ceasefire with long-term strategic issues is the most important thing right now. This is what we are working on now," he said.

At the same time, the Turkish Foreign Minister added that he did not rule out making ‘unpleasant decisions’ in the context of the territories.

"In an ideal world, we would like to see Ukraine's territorial integrity preserved. But there is a war going on, and unfortunately, as a result of this war, we have to make some unpleasant decisions. This is what they are trying to decide now: what they can keep, what they can leave, what they can postpone. I think that these are some of the priority areas that everyone is very focused on now: Americans, Europeans, us, Russians, Ukrainians," the minister explained.

"Both sides (Ukraine and Russia - Ed.) have different goals and concerns. And the question is whether American mediation will be enough to reach a compromise. Will (the US - Ed.) favour one side and leave the other? These are very serious questions," Fidan added.
