Rubio: We need to understand Russia’s demands to assess its readiness to end war in Ukraine

Rubio on conditions for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine

The United States believes that in order to assess Russia's readiness to end the war against Ukraine and sign a peace agreement, it is necessary to first find out the demands of the Russian side.

According to Censor.NET, this was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Fox News.

"Well, I think we're going to evaluate that (Russia's readiness for peace - ed.). We told them: do you guys want to end the war or do you want to continue? If you want to end the war, we can talk about what it would take to end it from their perspective. If you want to continue the war, just tell us now. And they agreed to follow through. So we're going to send teams of diplomats to meet with theirs and talk about what needs to be done to end the war," he said.

Rubio noted that if the Russian demands are unrealistic, it will be a sign that Russia does not want to end the war.

"But we have to test this offer. We need to know, and President Trump wants to know at the beginning of his presidency, whether the Russians are interested in ending this war or not," the American official added.

Meeting in Saudi Arabia

On February 12, 2025, Trump said that his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would likely take place in Saudi Arabia.

Trump also said that a meeting between representatives of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia would take place in Saudi Arabia next week.

On February 14, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced that the Kingdom was ready to host a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

On February 18, the US and Russian delegations meet in Saudi Arabia.

Both sides characterized it as positive. The U.S. and Russia agreed to resume the full-fledged work of the U.S. and Russian embassies in Moscow and Washington. The key issue was achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Fox News reported that Russia and the United States are allegedly proposing a three-step peace plan, including a ceasefire, elections in Ukraine, and then a final agreement.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Trump and Putin may hold a summit in Saudi Arabia next week.
