Ceasefire in Ukraine will not provide long-term security guarantees – Irish Prime Minister Martin after meeting with Zelenskyy

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin tells about his meeting with Zelenskyy

A ceasefire in Russia's war against Ukraine will not provide Kyiv with long-term security guarantees. Ireland will insist on an accelerated procedure for Kyiv's membership in the European Union.

This was stated by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, speaking to journalists after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, RTE reports, Censor.NET reports.

Martin called the meeting with Zelensky "very warm".

"We made it clear that we will insist on speeding up the process of Ukraine's membership in the European Union," Martin said.

He noted that joining the EU would provide Ukraine with certain security guarantees and "open up a number of opportunities" economically.

The Irish prime minister said that he and Zelenskyy also discussed the country's financial support for Ukraine.

According to him, the government is considering alternative options for providing funds to Ukraine, including the creation of a "feeding children in schools" initiative.

Martin added that Zelenskyy is "very focused on the need for central European involvement in a broader potential peace settlement."

"A ceasefire by itself does not give you long-term security. But of course ceasefires, especially in large countries like Ukraine, are much harder to monitor," Martin added.
