Russia's military intelligence (GRU) was preparing a terrorist attack in frontline Zaporizhzhia. An agent couple was detained who were preparing to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) near a local military unit on 25 March this year, the anniversary of the SSU's creation.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the SSU press service.
"On that day, the occupiers planned to remotely detonate explosives together with their agents near the checkpoint of the defence facility. The Security Service exposed both agents in advance and detained them on the point of equipping the IED with additional destructive elements.
The detention took place in a private building located opposite the main entrance to the military unit. The defendants rented the apartment as an observation post for the target," the statement said.
The offenders installed a hidden webcam on the window of the house and equipped it with remote access for Russian special services.
The defendants are a boy and a girl aged 18 and 19 who came to the attention of the Russian GRU while looking for "easy money" on Telegram channels.
During the searches, components for the manufacture of IEDs, a video camera and mobile phones with evidence of the crime were seized from them.
They have now been served a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- p. 2, Art. 28, p. 2, Art. 111 (high treason committed under martial law by prior conspiracy of a group of persons);
- p. 1, Art. 14, p. 2 Art. 258 (preparation to commit a terrorist act).
The offenders are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
