MPs want to close information on real estate that helps to record corruption - AntAC

Tomorrow, the parliament will vote on draft law No. 11533, which proposes to restrict access to data on the exact location of real estate and cadastral numbers of land plots during martial law and for a year afterwards.

This was reported by the Anti-Corruption Action Centre, Censor.NET reports.

"If the draft law is passed, the relevant column in the register will only contain information about the country or administrative centre where the property is located. That is, if we are talking about an apartment in a city, it will be possible to see this only if the apartment is located in Kyiv or Sevastopol, because only these cities are separate administrative units. However, it will be unclear in which district the apartment is located," the AntAC said.

What does this mean for journalists?

Journalists will not be able to find out, for example, whether an official has indicated the true price of their new apartment in their declaration. After all, the cost of an apartment in the Pechersk district and on the outskirts of the city may differ by several times.

How can this affect other citizens?

If you decide to buy a property, it will be surprisingly difficult to find out before you buy whether it really belongs to the person who introduced himself or herself to you as the owner.

It is noted that, if adopted, the draft law will make life easier for corrupt officials (in concealing their wealth) and may increase the number of frauds in the real estate sector. The victims of the latter will be ordinary citizens who often try to buy their only home with their last (or even borrowed) money.

"In general, this trend of hiding data from registers is an alarming signal from MPs. Today they will hide the address, and tomorrow they will introduce bills that will hide information about the cost, area, or even prohibit taking data on any person other than themselves," the Centre notes.

The bill was authored by the "servant of the people" Ihor Fris.
