On Friday, 28 March, police found the body of a man on the side of a road in the Dnipropetrovsk region with a gunshot wound to the head. According to media reports, the man in question was Oleksandr Plakhotnik, a former mayor and local deputy from the Batkivshchyna party ("Fatherland").
This was reported by the police of the Dnipropetrovsk region, Censor.NET reports.
It is noted that the driver of one of the cars told law enforcement officers that he had found the body of a person on the side of the road in the Kamianske district. He called the police at around 08:20 a.m.
The investigative team worked at the scene. A forensic laboratory was also involved.
"Police opened a criminal investigation into the murder of a man in Kamianske district. During the preliminary examination, a gunshot wound was found on the body in the head area," law enforcement officials later said.
The police are establishing the circumstances of the crime in the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under paragraph 11 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (premeditated murder).
What is known about Oleksandr Plakhotnik?
The website of the Chesno movement states that Plakhotnik is a member of the Batkivshchyna party. He is a native of Kamianske and was the general director of the Kamianske City Council's Municipal Utility Company "Miskvodokanal".
In 2014, the man ran for the Verkhovna Rada from the Batkivshchyna faction, but was not elected.
He also held the position of First Deputy Mayor of Kamianske.
According to Suspilne's own sources, Plakhotnik was a long-term business partner of the Dubinskyi brothers, who are associated with corruption scandals.
Volodymyr Fedorov, head of the information and analytical department of the regional organisation of the Batkivshchyna party, told the newspaper that they consider Plakhotnik's death to be a contract killing.
His wife, Olena Plakhotnik, is a member of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council and heads the regional branch of the Batkivshchyna party.
