IAEA chief Grossi is "very serious" about taking UN Secretary-General’s seat

Rafael Grossi wants to lead UN

The current head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, plans to take the post of UN Secretary-General.

Grossi said this during a speech at the CARI Center, Censor.NET reports with reference to Hromadske.

It should be noted that since 2017, the post of UN Secretary-General has been held by Portuguese diplomat Antonio Guterres. The next head of the United Nations will be appointed in 2026.

"The process of selecting Guterres's successor has not yet begun. This is a process that will begin at the end of this year, when a call for nominations will be issued within the UN General Assembly. I am considering it, and I am considering it very seriously. That's all I can say at this point," Grossi said.

He also said that he had already discussed the issue of his nomination with government officials of his homeland, Argentina, in particular with the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The contact with the administration of Argentine President Javier Millais is also crucial. Grossi said he has an excellent relationship with him.

"As an Argentine diplomat, it would obviously be an honor for my country to nominate me, but this is something that falls under the jurisdiction of the president," Grossi said.

The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council. Any of the five permanent members of the council-China, France, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom-can veto the nomination. So most secretaries general are "compromise" candidates.
