German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed categorical criticism of US President Donald Trump's decision to impose new duties, stressing that this decision poses a serious threat to the global economy.

This is reported by The Guardian, Censor.NET informs.

Scholz called Trump’s decision was "fundamentally wrong" and undermined the free trade globally, that had contributed to global prosperity, which he said was an achievement of the United States.

He warned that all countries will suffer from these "ill-considered decisions."

Using similar language, German economy minister Robert Habeck added that the introduction of such duties was "the most disruptive tariff increases in 90 years," as he warned of potentially "dramatic" effects of these decisions. He urged nations in favour of free trade to form a united front in response.

Habeck also noted that existing trade agreements did not harm the United States, as Trump had claimed, and that the consequences of such decisions would not be limited to Germany and Europe. The minister stressed that Germany had already developed countermeasures in response, which had not yet been disclosed, but would be implemented when the time came.

Trump imposes tariffs

As a reminder, Trump has signed a decree imposing a minimum 10 percent tariff on almost all goods entering the United States. For some countries, the tariffs are higher. In particular, China - 34%, the European Union - 20%.

Later it became known that Trump had declared a state of emergency in the country's economy.
