FIFA President Infantino supports return of Russian athletes to international football

Gianni Infantino

During the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he wants Russia to return to international football competitions as soon as possible.

This was reported by Censor.NET, citing European Pravda.

"As peace negotiations on Ukraine continue, I hope we will soon be able to turn the page — and bring Russia back to international football. That would mean everything has been resolved.

This is what we should be hoping for, this is what we should be praying for. Because football is not about division — it's about unity. Uniting girls, uniting boys, uniting people wherever they may be. And how wonderful it would be to unite — to reunite — through sport," UEFA's press service quoted him as saying.

Earlier, it was reported that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is considering the possibility of allowing Russian teams to return to UEFA tournaments in the event of a complete ceasefire.

Recently, at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Serbia, officials honored the memory of Russian football players, coaches, and referees who died in 2024. Among them was Russian Alexei Bugaev, who was killed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the frontline in Ukraine.
