The girl's funeral took place on 18 December. During the ceremony, Matilda's aunt described her as a joyful child who "spread love everywhere she went" and called on the community to honour her memory with good deeds.

Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns attended Matilda's funeral.

  • It is noted that Matilda's parents chose her name in honour of the song "Waltzing Matilda", often referred to as Australia's unofficial anthem, as a sign of gratitude to the country that gave their family refuge.

The mother of the murdered child told the BBC that she and her husband had moved to Australia from Ukraine more than 10 years ago and she did not expect her daughter's life to be in danger in Sydney.

The family has another daughter, who was also at the Hanukkah celebration.
