Documentary about Maidan nominated for Oscar

On Jan. 14, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the short list of Oscar nominees.

The "Best Documentary" award is contested by five nominees, including the film by Russian-born American director Evgeny Afineevsky "Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom." The director filmed the events on Maidan until Viktor Yanukovych fled the country.

Film's premiere took place on Sept. 3, 2015 at the Venice festival. On Oct. 9, the film was released on Netflix.
