Cabinet approves Savchenko-Sentsov sanction list

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has submitted a list of persons involved in illegal actions against Nadiia Savchenko, Oleh Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko, who may fall under personal sanctions, including economic restrictions, for consideration by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).

According to the document, the Cabinet has approved the proposals on imposing personal sanctions, special economic and other restrictions on individuals involved in unlawful acts against Nadiia Savchenko, Oleh Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko and submitted them to the National Security and Defense Council for consideration.

The decree does not list persons that may be targeted by sanctions.

Pursuant to the document, the authorities are obliged to monitor, check and prevent any transactions, applications for licensing documents or expression of the will by persons or with the participation of persons included in the submitted sanction list.

As also noted, after the NSDC approves the list, the Foreign Ministry is to notify the competent authorities of the European Union, the United States and other countries so that they consider the introduction of similar sanctions.

"The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine shall decide on the duration of restrictions and notification of those targeted as well as publication of the list of such persons," the document reads.

Earlier, March 17, 2016, Poroshenko, while on a visit to Brussels, submitted Ukraine's proposals on sanctions against persons involved in fabricating the Savchenko case to President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and President of the European Council Donald Tusk. Later, it became known that the list included 46 names.

On March 24, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the proposals on restrictive measures against individuals involved in illegal actions against Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadiia Savchenko and submitted them to the NSDC. The National Security and Defense Council approved the proposals, while all 84 individuals were listed in the NSDC decision of March 25, 2016 which was put into effect by the presidential decree of March 29, 2016 No. 121/2016.

On July 8, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariana Betsa reported that the ministry was working on the expansion of the Savchenko-Sentsov sanction list over a number of new illegal cases opened against Russian-held Ukrainians.
