Elections cannot be held now, so we need government of national unity – Yatsenyuk

Yatsenyuk calls for national unity government until war is won

A government of national unity should be formed, and representatives of all political forces should be brought together in the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).

According to Censor.NET, Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) Chairman and former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said this during the National Roundtable marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, titled "35 Years of Restored Independence. Unity Around the Flag," organised by the KSF.

"We need a government of national unity in which the people trust the authorities and the authorities care for their people. We need this to achieve victory in the war. There are discussions about elections. Elections cannot legally be held today. There can be no fair, transparent, and democratic elections.

If elections would bring Ukraine’s victory closer, why did Putin propose holding them through our American partners last year? Thinking about winning an election could lead to losing the war. Therefore, we must first win the war," he stressed.

Yatsenyuk believes that the authorities should unite the efforts of Ukraine’s entire political establishment.

"I would like to propose that the key state body headed by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the country’s president – the NSDC – include representatives of all political forces in order to share political responsibility for all decisions made in the country.

And to ensure that Ukrainian government officials likewise do not think about elections, which will take place only after victory in the war, members of the government should publicly declare that they have no political ambitions and will not run for the country’s next parliament," the KSF chairman proposed.

Yatsenyuk also noted that parliament should be able to demand an account from every member of the government, who should act not as a politician but as a statesperson, and ask what they have accomplished.

Judicial reform, which forms part of Ukraine’s path towards the EU, is also important.

"This kind of public dialogue, which we are conducting today, should demonstrate within the country that we are strong and show our enemy, Putin, that our strength will enable us to win this war," he concluded.

The Kyiv Security Forum, founded by Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s Open Ukraine Foundation, is the country’s leading platform for discussing issues of war and peace and national and global security.
