Hungary has withdrawn from ’Carpathian Eight’, - Péter Magyar
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, has stated that his country is not participating in the ‘Carpathian Eight’ initiative, which was launched by Ukraine to strengthen cooperation between the states of the Carpathian region.
According to Censor.NET, he made this statement during a speech in parliament; he is quoted by the Hungarian publication HVG.
Budapest received an invitation but declined it
According to Magyar, Ukraine invited Hungary to join the new format. However, Budapest did not accept the invitation.
"We were invited, but we didn’t go for valid reasons," he said.
At the same time, the Prime Minister did not explain exactly what the reasons for the refusal were.
Which countries are part of the new format?
On 18 September, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced the establishment of a new format for cooperation – the ‘Carpathian Eight’.
It is to comprise Ukraine and seven European countries: Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. The format also provides for the participation of the European Union.
Following the first ‘Carpathian Summit’, the heads of state and government and representatives of Ukraine, Austria, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia adopted a final declaration.
The Deputy Hungarian Ambassador in Kyiv attended the ‘Carpathian Eight’ summit on behalf of Hungary.
