War in Ukraine will be settled sooner than people realise. Time to stop killing – Trump
US President Donald Trump again promised to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, saying that Washington was "working very closely" with the leaders of both sides.
Trump made the statement during his address to the UN General Assembly on 22 September, Censor.NET reports.
On the pace of efforts to end the war
Trump said that the White House was working "very closely" on the issue with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, adding that 25,000 young people were dying every month in the war in Ukraine.
"I look at those pictures from the battlefield, and I really do not want to see them anymore. I think it will happen sooner than people realise. They are tired of it," the US president said, stressing that it was time to "stop the killing".
On sanctions bill against Russia
Trump recalled that he had signed a "powerful" bill by Lindsey Graham granting him "enormous new tariff powers" to strengthen sanctions against Russia. He said he would use those powers "if necessary" and that this would help end the war.
Trump also separately thanked his wife Melania for her work to return displaced persons and children to their homes in Ukraine, including those abducted by Russia.
On "ended" conflicts
Trump also repeated his claim that he considered it a "great honour" to have ended eight wars during his second term in office, asserting that "almost every one of those countries sent him a letter of thanks".
According to him, the prime minister of Pakistan allegedly told him that he had personally saved 30 million lives.
- The conflicts that the US president previously claimed to have ended include Israel-Hamas, Israel-Iran, Egypt-Ethiopia, India-Pakistan, Serbia-Kosovo, Rwanda-Congo, Armenia-Azerbaijan and Cambodia-Thailand.
- Before beginning his second term, Trump repeatedly claimed that he would end the Russian-Ukrainian war in one day.
