Zelenskyy to meet Trump tomorrow: Topics include aid to Ukraine and energy as step toward ending war – President’s Office
A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump is expected to take place in New York tomorrow, September 22. During the talks, the parties plan to discuss diplomatic avenues for ending the war, the protection of energy infrastructure, the supply of additional air defence systems, and the prospects for licensed production of missiles for Patriot systems in Ukraine.
A source in the Office of the President reported this, Censor.NET informs, citing Suspilne.
What will the leaders discuss?
According to the source, Zelenskyy plans to discuss with Trump previous meetings with US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as further diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the Russian-Ukrainian war.
A separate topic of the talks will be energy in the context of possible steps to end the war.
The presidents also plan to discuss a "winter support" package for Ukraine. In particular, the talks will cover the provision of additional air defence capabilities.
Zelenskyy and Trump are also expected to raise the issue of licensing the production in Ukraine of missiles for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems.
Background
The day before, Zelenskyy publicly announced that he had agreed with Trump to meet in New York during the UN General Assembly. The Ukrainian president said that the meeting "could change a great deal" and spoke about diplomatic momentum in negotiations to end the war.
Zelenskyy previously also said that the United States was responding positively to Ukraine’s proposals for the licensed production of air defence systems. According to him, Trump planned to approach US defence companies regarding the licensed production of air defence missiles in Ukraine and Europe.
