Risk of war spreading beyond Ukraine is growing – UN Under-Secretary-General
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said the intensification of Russia’s war against Ukraine was increasing risks across the region.
She made the remarks at a UN Security Council meeting in New York on maintaining peace and security in Ukraine, Ukrinform reports, according to Censor.NET.
DiCarlo warns of a new dangerous phase of the war
According to DiCarlo, the war is entering a new dangerous phase. She said attacks were intensifying, civilian casualties were rising, and the destruction was growing more extensive.
"We are entering a new dangerous phase of the war in Ukraine. With each passing day, attacks intensify, civilian casualties rise, the scale of destruction grows, and the risk of the conflict spreading across the region increases," DiCarlo said.
She stressed that the consequences of the war were being felt far beyond Ukraine. She said the issue was not only the intensification of hostilities, but also growing human suffering, regional risks and harm to the international legal order.
UN raises concern about risk of war spreading
DiCarlo said concern was growing that the war could spread to countries neighboring Ukraine.
According to her, drones are increasingly entering or approaching the airspace of neighboring states. This has heightened fears that the conflict could spread to other countries in the region.
She also mentioned attacks on border crossing points and on transport and logistics infrastructure near international borders.
The UN under-secretary-general recalled reports in recent weeks of drone incidents in Ukraine’s border areas with Moldova and Poland, as well as in Lithuania and Romania.
DiCarlo stressed that the choice now was between further expansion of the conflict and a path toward its resolution.
- Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Ukraine had agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire and called on Russia to do the same.
