Antoine de Massy

A 42-year-old Ukrainian citizen has been remanded in custody in Monaco on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist 29-year-old Antoine de Massy, a member of the princely family who was found dead on October 25.

Monaco’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced this, Le Figaro reports, according to Censor.NET.

Who was Antoine de Massy?

Antoine de Massy, 29, was the grandson of Princess Antoinette — the elder sister of Prince Rainier III, Monaco’s former ruler and the father of the reigning prince, Albert II. Antoine’s father, Christian de Massy, and Albert II are first cousins, making Antoine Albert II’s first cousin once removed.

  • He was found dead on Sunday, October 25, near the shore in the Larvotto area. According to the prosecutor, the likely cause of death was a fall from a height of 13 meters.

What is known about the detainee?

The Ukrainian citizen was arrested on Monday, October 26, and subsequently remanded in custody on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger. According to the prosecutor’s office, the acts in question may have occurred at different times.

The detainee is 42 years old and has lived in the principality for 30 years. During questioning, he denied involvement in Antoine de Massy’s death.

According to a source familiar with the case cited in the report, Antoine de Massy was seen near the exit of a nightclub on the night of his death: he was staggering, and a man beside him was supporting him. The report does not identify this man or state whether he was the person arrested.

Local outlet Monaco Life, citing Prosecutor General Stéphane Thibault, reports that Antoine’s body was found in a park below Boulevard du Larvotto after his relatives reported him missing.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
