Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that his country would contribute €500 million to the European Union’s planned €90 billion loan for Ukraine.

What is known

"Regarding the loan for Ukraine... €500 million is our initial contribution. This is a very important and effective mechanism. I truly commend the initiative of von der Leyen, the members of the European Commission and President Costa to establish it, using frozen assets to provide Ukraine with much-needed funding," Carney said during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.

The Canadian prime minister said his country’s contribution was an example of putting Canada’s recently announced partnership with the European Union into practice, adding that it was a "positive alliance".

Background

Earlier, Canada announced an allocation of CAD 350 million (around $253 million) to purchase interceptor missiles for Ukraine.
