Poklad dismisses two SSU officers implicated in NABU’s "Carthage" case

SSU

SSU chief Oleksandr Poklad has dismissed two senior officials from their posts after they were implicated in NABU’s investigation as part of Operation Carthage. He also called on an individual implicated in the case, nicknamed "Mexican", to return to Ukraine and surrender to law enforcement.

The SSU press service reported this, Censor.NET reports.

SSU statement

The service stressed that it was providing full support and facilitating all necessary procedural actions in the criminal proceedings in question.

"The Security Service expects a transparent, objective and impartial investigation. I discussed this with the heads of NABU and SAPO, among others. There is clear and constructive cooperation. I am also in contact with our colleagues in the intelligence services of partner countries. We are doing everything necessary to ensure that these crimes are investigated in other jurisdictions as well," Poklad said.

Appeal to "Mexican"

The SSU chief separately addressed the individual identified in NABU’s materials as "Mexican":

"As for the so-called ‘Mexican’ implicated in the case, I suggest he come to Ukraine and surrender to law enforcement. Otherwise, we will find him ourselves, wherever he may be hiding. We have experience. The SSU works and will continue to work solely for Ukraine," Poklad stressed.

What is known about the case

  • Earlier, NABU released its investigation into the Carthage case. It alleges, among other things, that SSU and National Police officers assisted a criminal group that investigators believe was involved in torture and abductions for hire. According to the Bureau, "Mexican" is a Russian citizen and the founder and leader of the transnational Khimprom drug cartel who had been hiding in Ukraine.
