Fico in Lviv: EU unable to propose effective plan to end war in Ukraine

Fico

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said after talks in Lviv that the EU had no effective initiatives to end Russia's war against Ukraine. He urged Brussels to step up its foreign policy efforts.

Fico made the remarks during a press conference with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, Censor.NET reports, citing Interfax-Ukraine.

Criticism of the EU

"The EU has 27 member states and is unable to develop initiatives that could help bring this terrible situation to an end," Fico said.

  • The Slovak prime minister stressed the need to fundamentally rethink the European Union's approach to global security. He expressed his conviction that the EU should be the architect of a peace plan if other international institutions, including the UN, were unable to do so.

"A lack of political leadership"

Fico also expressed skepticism about the European Union's current ability to resolve major geopolitical crises.

"It is with great regret that I must acknowledge that the Union's internal situation is what it is. Member states are struggling with very serious problems. It seems we simply lack the political leadership that could enable the Union to address more serious issues rather than focus on ourselves, as we are doing now," he said.

At the same time, Fico pledged: "We will do everything we can to wake the EU up and make it more active."
