Zhytomyr suspends electric public transport and introduces electricity-saving measures

Zhytomyr halts electric public transport to save electricity

Zhytomyr has introduced electricity-saving measures following damage to the power system caused by Russian strikes. The city is temporarily suspending electric public transport and reducing street lighting.

Censor.NET reports, citing Zhytomyr City Council.

Electric public transport to stop, lighting to be restricted

The city council explained that electricity consumption must be reduced because of damage to the power system. This should help prevent further failures and stabilize the electricity supply.

Specifically, Zhytomyr is introducing the following restrictions:

  • electric public transport will temporarily stop operating;
  • street lighting will switch to an energy-saving mode;
  • residents are urged to reduce electricity consumption, particularly during peak hours;
  • businesses are asked to switch off decorative and advertising lighting, facade lighting, illuminated advertising signs and electronic screens.

The city council also warned that power outages could cause traffic lights to operate intermittently or stop working.

"Every unnecessary appliance switched off contributes to the stability of our power system," the city council stressed.

Traffic lights may stop working during power outages

Zhytomyr residents and drivers were urged to remain alert on the roads. When traffic lights are off, road users must follow traffic rules, pay attention to road signs and give way to pedestrians.

Also on November 5, emergency power outages were introduced in Kyiv and the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv and Cherkasy regions because of the consequences of Russian attacks and the difficult situation in the power system.

Russia continues to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including power generation facilities and substations through which electricity reaches consumers.
