The Security Service of Ukraine prevented the contract killing of a key witness in the case of bribery of an officer of the SSU Main Investigation Department.
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine, Censor.NET informs.
Thus, the SSU recalled that in the spring of 2024, a group of raiders offered a Ukrainian special service officer $1 million. In an attempt to bribe the official, the criminals hoped for his help in the raider seizure of a mining company in Vinnytsia region. The colonel of the Ukrainian intelligence service immediately reported the "offer" to his superiors, after which the suspects were detained.
"While in the pre-trial detention centre, the organiser of the criminal group planned the murder of the main witness in the case. In this way, he tried to avoid punishment in court," the SSU said.
It is noted that to commit the crime, the defendant began looking for a killer. To do this, he turned for help to the arrested criminals who were in the pre-trial detention centre with him and had relevant connections on the outside.
It is reported that the raider promised to provide the potential murderer with all personal information about the witness, including his address and travel routes. After the crime was committed, the customer guaranteed to pay the killer $50,000.
"SSU officers exposed the defendant's plans in advance, documented his illegal activities and blocked them at the stage of preparation for the contract killing," the SSU said in a statement.
The raider has now been served a new notice of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 27, Part 1 of Art. 14, paras. 8, 11, 12, part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation to commit a contract murder). Previously, his actions were classified under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (offering, promising or giving an unlawful benefit to an official).
The SSU added that the offender faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
As reported in May, the SSU detained businessmen in Kyiv who offered a $1 million bribe to an officer of the SSU's Main Investigation Department. The businessmen wanted the official to assist them in a raider seizure of a mining company that owns one of the largest quarries in Vinnytsia region.
