The news of Vasyl Ratushnyi's death in the battle against the Russian occupiers became known on 28 February 2025.
The farewell ceremony began at noon at St Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.
After the funeral service at St. Michael's Cathedral, all those present joined a remembrance march to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, where the farewell ceremony for Vasyl Ratushnyi continued. About a thousand people, including his family, friends, and comrades-in-arms, came to pay their respects.
As Vasyl was fond of musical instruments, live music was played on the Maidan.
The soldier was buried at the Baikove cemetery.
Vasyl Ratushnyi was serving as a drone pilot in the 414th separate brigade of strike unmanned aerial systems, the Magyar Birds, and was killed by a direct attack by a Russian UAV.
In addition, Vasyl Ratushnyi was an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity and later joined the Ukrainian army during the ATO/JFO.
Vasyl Ratushnyi's younger brother, Roman Ratushnyi, a participant in the Revolution of Dignity, an activist who fought against illegal construction in Kyiv, and a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 9 June 2022 while performing a combat mission near Izium.
He took part in the defence of Kyiv from the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion, and then, as a scout with the 93rd SMB, he liberated Trostianets (Sumy region).
