An agent of the Russian GRU was detained near Odesa who wanted to obtain secret Ukrainian developments in the field of unmanned aerial systems.
This was reported by the SSU press service, Censor.NET informs.
The detainee is a resident of the so-called Transnistria who arrived in Odesa region. The man was to recruit a serviceman of the Defence Forces who worked with drones.
"After establishing 'contact' with the Ukrainian soldier, the agent hoped to obtain technical documentation for the latest Ukrainian strike and reconnaissance UAVs through him. At all stages of the hostile special operation, the spy reported to his supervisor, the 'Deputy Minister of Defence of Transnistria', who cooperated with the Russian GRU.
The Security Service exposed the agent immediately when he arrived in our country under the guise of an entrepreneur who allegedly imported Ukrainian food products," the statement said.
After documenting the offender's every move, the SSU detained him red-handed while he was trying to obtain a flash drive with classified information on UAVs.
"The defendant planned to take it to unrecognised Transnistria to set up his own production of combat drones for Russia.
However, the Security Service thwarted the enemy's plans. In addition, during the detention, two pistols were found on the spy, which have now been sent for examination," they said.
The man was served a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- p. 1, Article 114 (espionage);
- p. 1, Art. 263 (illegal handling of weapons).
The offender is in custody. He faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
