Police Captain Serhii Chornyi was killed while performing his duties in the Khmelnytskyi region. Law enforcement officers came under armed attack.

Circumstances of the death

"On 15 May 2026, police officers came under armed attack in the village of Terlivka, Letychiv territorial community, Khmelnytskyi district. A 33-year-old police captain died of his injuries," the statement reads.

He devoted more than 15 years to service

It is noted that Serhii Chornyi devoted more than 15 years to service in Ukraine’s internal affairs agencies. In 2014, he graduated from Lviv State University of Internal Affairs with a degree in Law.

He worked as an inspector of the patrol police response sector at Police Department No. 3 of the Khmelnytskyi District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Khmelnytskyi region.

His colleagues knew him as a principled, responsible police officer devoted to the Oath, who was always the first to come to people’s aid.

The law enforcement officer is survived by his parents, wife, and two children.

"His death is an irreparable loss for his family, colleagues, and the entire police community… We bow our heads in mourning and express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen officer. Eternal memory and everlasting honour to our colleague, who remained faithful to his service and the Ukrainian people until the end," the police said.

What happened

Earlier, it was reported that at around 2:35 p.m. in the village of Terlivka, Letychiv territorial community, Khmelnytskyi district, police officers came under armed attack while checking the documents of a driver who had been banned from driving by a court ruling. The man opened fire on the police officers, killing one law enforcement officer and wounding another.
