"Mother Ukraine" monument illuminated with audiovisual art installation for Independence Day. PHOTOS

The audiovisual art installation "The Future Remembers" by lighting designer Mykola Kabluka was unveiled on Kyiv’s "Mother Ukraine" monument. The project was created for Ukraine’s Independence Day.

What is known about the installation?

It will be projected onto the "Mother Ukraine" monument every evening through September 1. The installation lasts five minutes. During this time, various symbols appear on the monument, forming a single narrative about Ukraine’s history, identity, connection between generations and future.

The project was created by Ukrainian artist and lighting designer Mykola Kabluka. The projection combines Cossack embroidery, Crimean Tatar ornaments and symbols of the civilizations that inhabited Ukrainian lands over the centuries, including the Greeks, Scythians and Slavs.

"I was struck by the title of this installation, ‘The Future Remembers.’ On the one hand, there is a certain contradiction in this phrase. On the other hand, there is a great deal of truth in it. Our future is shaped by events from our past; our future is already being created today and is determined by the decisions people make every day," Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna said.

Autostrada served as the project’s patron. The installation was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

What the installation’s symbols mean:

"Roots" embody the connection to the land, history, and past generations;
"Spirals" represent time, which is not linear but cyclical and alive;
"Water" symbolizes cleansing from false layers and imposed ideas;
"Wings" embody freedom of choice, inner uplift and the ability to transcend boundaries;
"Stars" symbolize people and their dreams;
"Constellations" represent the interconnectedness of Ukrainians and the future we are creating together.
