Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has decided to run in the presidential elections scheduled for March 2024, which will allow him to remain in power until at least 2030. The Kremlin leader believes he must "lead Russia through the most dangerous period in decades".
According to Censor.NET, Reuters reported this with reference to six sources.
According to the anonymous interlocutors, news of Putin's decision has "already leaked out" and his advisers are now preparing for Putin's campaign and election.
For Putin, who enjoys an 80% approval rating inside Russia, according to opinion polls, the election is a formality if he runs: with the support of the state, state media and the almost complete absence of dissent in society, he is certain to win, the agency said.
"The decision has been made - he will run," said one source familiar with the planning.
Another source, also familiar with the plans in the Kremlin, confirmed that the decision had been made and that Putin's advisers were preparing for the Russian dictator's participation. Three other sources confirmed the same.
A foreign diplomatic source, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that Putin had made the decision recently and that an announcement would be made soon.
"Although many foreign diplomats, intelligence officials and officials say they expect Putin to remain in power for life, there has been no concrete confirmation of his plans to run for president in March 2024," Reuters adds.
Russian presidential elections are due to be held on 17 March 2024.
