Hungary blocks draft EU summit decision on Ukraine - media

The EU countries have not yet agreed on the wording of the final decision of the EU summit on the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession, as Budapest continues to block issues related to support for Kyiv.

According to Censor.NET, a European diplomat told Interfax-Ukraine on condition of anonymity.

He noted that the permanent representatives of the EU member states will continue to discuss the draft decision of the European Council on the start of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU until Sunday.

"The meetings of the permanent representatives will continue until Sunday. Hungary still continues to block (the decision to start negotiations with Ukraine on EU membership - Ed.)," the diplomat said.

The European Council meeting at the level of heads of state and government will take place in Brussels on 14-15 December. The EU leaders are to discuss the European Commission's proposal to give the green light to the start of membership negotiations with Ukraine, which can be launched after Kyiv fulfils the remaining conditions in full.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote a letter to the European Council in which he threatened to block all EU aid to Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and accession talks until there is a "frank and open discussion about the realism of the EU's strategic goals in Ukraine".
