On Thursday, January 18, the members of the European Parliament will vote for the resolution on depriving Hungary of the right to vote in the Council of the European Union. In the document, MEPs also call for an investigation into the legality of the European Commission’s decision to unfreeze 10 billion euros for Budapest.

This was reported by Euractiv, Censor.NET reports.

As noted, most members of the European Parliament believe that the unfreezing of funds did not take place based on objective improvements in the judicial system of Hungary and the rule of law, but to make concessions to Hungary.

The two main points of the resolution demand to start the process of depriving Hungary of the right to vote by Article 7.2 of the EU Treaty.

"We are sending a strong message to the European Commission: if they simply distribute billions of euros to avoid Hungary's veto, they will not get away with it," MEP Daniel Freund, who is one of the leading negotiators of the resolution, said in a comment to the publication.

In this way, MEPs hope to warn the European Commission before the EU summit on February 2. Nor do they want to allow the executive branch to continue unfreezing funds for Hungary in exchange for Orbán's support for financial aid to Ukraine.

"The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, succumbed to Viktor Orbán's blackmail and unfroze 10 billion of taxpayers' money for Hungary, despite large-scale corruption in the country. The European Parliament does not agree with this and will challenge her decision in the European Court of Justice," commented the MEP from Renew Moritz Koerner.

According to the publication, the final draft of the resolution may also include a vote of no confidence in EC President Ursula von der Leyen if the agency continues to unfreeze funds for Hungary.
